We always forget that Winter begins on 21 December, and therefore the biting chill of frost and snow takes hold in January and February more often than November and December. Whether you’re waiting for a train on a dark morning or venturing out on a Sunday dog walk there’s nothing quite like a hand knitted scarf or hat to keep you warm. So as Winter truly is coming I wanted to share one of my favourite handmade knitwear shops on Etsy, Seasick Knits.
Based in Reykjavik, Iceland – i.e. the coolest place on Earth (geddit?) Seasick Knits is the creation of a friend of mine, Alex, who has taken her talents for knitting and Nordic & Scandinavian inspired style and combined them to create Seasick Knits. I am a proud owner of a Seasick Knits scarf which kept me cosy and warm during my recent trip to Iceland. A chunky knit grey and yellow number, it is neutral enough to go with everything I own but with a pop of colour and personality. Plus, yellow is the best.
Alex hand knits all the products sold on Seasick Knits Etsy page, and tests out designs on her and her friends before selling. All Alex’s designs are created with the brisk Icelandic wind and rain in mind and so are beautifully knitted and incredibly warm. Inspired by the sea, a lot of Seasick Knits products have a nautical theme, including their adorable miniature sweaters!
Perfect for Christmas decorations or to add a touch of the seaside to your home, or if your lucky enough to have a beach hut or similar seaside retreat then they’re ideal! Alex knits tiny nautical designs on to each sweater including my absolute favourite the yacht design!
There’s nothing quite like the Icelandic coastline to inspire someone – whether that’s to become more fit and active, taking hikes over the hills or to indulge in your creative side as Alex has!
